Acoustic guitar – Guitar Pickups

The following guitar lesson is particularly excellent for those who have some experience playing a guitar. It teaches you how to convert an acoustic guitar into an acoustic electric guitar. Interesting isn’t it. You get a two in one effect through a single guitar. The video also gives you a great demo of performing the conversion procedure using a mark up. It shows you with easy to follow steps. It is extremely beneficial for all those who want greater outputs from their guitars. You can get greater functionality by playing around a little bit.

How you doing, good people? David here from NextLevelGuitar.com and I wanted to give you a little bit of information regarding taking a acoustic guitar and making a acoustic electric guitar. This right here is a Yamaha acoustic electric guitar. This is the model apx5a, I gotta lot of questions about this from our videos and it has a really great sound when its plugged in.

Now this guitar has a pick up inside the body and it also has you could see it right there a built in EQ which is nice. I could control the low mids and highs and the volume level of this guitar. It is driven from a 9 volt battery which is in this built in the guitar also. And this guitar is a nice affordable guitar if you need something acoustic electric. And a lot of people liked that option because I need it when I am doing lessons to be plugging it in plus if I am playing live I want to be able to plug this in to an amp. Right now I am running this through a basic clean channel through a solid state amplifier with a little bit of reverb.

Hear that reverb. And a little bit chorus. That’s a really nice sound. It’s kind of rich and full. So I like the guitar for its acoustic electric sound. Now if I unplug it and play it acoustically, it has a decent sound not great. But it’s good ok. So what I wanna show you is how can I take any acoustic guitar and make it an acoustic electric guitar even if it doesn’t have a built in pick up or this on board EQ batteries and that. And the answer is easy my friends. What you wanna pick up and get is just an acoustic guitar pick up, ok. This one is made by Dean Markley and it fits right into this sound hole of most acoustic guitars. Here’s the pick up ok. There’s the back and the front.

It is covered with felt so that it doesn’t damage the guitar when you put it in the side because you have to jam it in. I will show you how to do that and it won’t damage a guitar and it comes out with a nice quarter inch cable, little tangled. But there’s your quarter inch and you plug that right into the amp and bing bang boom. You have an instant acoustic electric. So how does this happen. Now let’s show you ok. Let’s take this guitar here which is a really nice Martin guitar and has a very nice sound. Very rich very full sounding. I love it. Really love these Martins’ ok. And what I am gonna do is take this and I can leave the strings on and put it right underneath ok and attach it to the sides. I am gonna show you how I do that by zooming the camera in and plug into my app. And this guitar which does not have a pick up built into it. There’s no jack or anything like that. But we are gonna make it acoustic electric ok.

So let’s zoom the camera in and I will show you how to that. Ok so here’s our acoustic Dean Markley pick up and this is our quarter inch lead and we have our Martin guitar and we are gonna leave the strings on and al you gonna do is, this has slots on the sides of it and we are gonna putthos e slots right on the edges of the guitar ok. You wanna kind of do this carefully. You are gonna take it underneath. Now I like having the lead on the bottom ok and then grab it with the other hand and so I am basically under the strings grabbing it like this with my thumb and second finger alright. And then I am gonna insert it into one side of the guitar. You might have to turn it a little bit. There we go. Put the one side in put the other side in nice and straight. There’s foam in there so it’s protecting it and then I have it in there steady and then I like the lead up the bottom here.

So if you have it up here it might come down and tap the string or something. I like it coming out of the bottom and so I am gonna take this and plug it in to the amp and let’s give its trial run. So we just plug this in. Ok so we have our acoustic pick up installed and now I have the quarter inch end plugged in to our little practice amp. Check it out. Now you could make any acoustic, acoustic electric and if you wanna add some effects for instance let’s add a little chorus may be a little reverb.

Hear that reverb we got on there now. Because we have it running through an amp or if you run it through a PA system because its now a signal you can use effects and have some fun. And there you have it, so if you want to make your acoustic guitar into an acoustic electric, have it plugged into a PA system, In case you are playing with a band or you wanna plug it into an amp just to have some fun, it’s very simple these acoustic electric pick ups are fairly inexpensive. It gives you the nice quarter inch end and they just go into the amp, it’s a simple installation that doesn’t hurt the guitar and gives us lots of fun and now you have lots of options. You can do it, we will see you soon. Don’t forget to subscribe to the videos and visit our website at NextLevelGuitar.com.
