Hello and welcome, this video on guitar lessons demonstrates basic chord and strumming patterns. The video shows how to use thumb and fingers to play simple chord changing exercises in the Classic Folk Guitar’ playing style. The video also includes chord charts for commonly played guitar chords.
Hello my name is Dennis Whitt and I am the resident guitar instructor for the guitarnet.com, you can find our website at www.theguitarnet.com. And today I am doing a guitar lesson on chords and strumming. There are lot of different methods used by guitarist to strum chords and lot of different strumming patterns with different rhythms to play them. One of the ways that guitar strum is with a straight pick or thumb pick. Since we are doing a classic folk guitar lessons, we are just gonna to use the thumb ammm usually for hitting base nodes and sometimes for strumming. And will also use our fingers to strum.
Hello I am back again; this is Dennis Whitt the guitar teacher for theguitarnet. And we are now looking at some chord charts and there is also some text there ammm with some strumming patterns and things like that. I am not sure how well you can read the text in this screen caption but ammm one thing you can try is to ammm go to your browser and click on the view menu, and there might be an option there to zoom in a little bit which might help you. If that doesn’t work you can always go to the website and that’s www.theguitarnet.com and click on the learn guitar tab and all the links enter you come to the chords and strumming page. Click on that there you will find the same chord charts and you should be able to read the text pretty easily there on the website.
Looking at these chords it starts with a G, and then there is C a D, an F, an A, an E, an A minor, a D minor and then E minor. These are some of the really common chords that you will be able to play with lot of songs with. Just you need to practice changing them and one method for changing chords is just strum each chord four times and try to get from one chord to another without having to stop in between. It might be a good idea to count one two three four as you are doing that. Ammm getting ready now to move on the strumming patterns which I am going to actually demonstrate on the guitar. I will leave this a graphic appear for just couple of more seconds so you can look at over. And I will be back in just a few minutes.
Next thing I wanna go through is little exercise for changing chords and all it is, is that you strum each chord four times. So I would start with a G and count one two three four so let’s go ahead and do that G one two three four, C, E, F, you get the general idea. That’s what I call exercise one. Now we move on to basic strums, ammm the first pattern is the base strum, base strum if let’s use any minor on this nice fore sounding chord. The base node for E and minor is the sixth string. When you strum, in this case just use the fingers. We are going to strum the remaining strings especially the top three or four strings. So ammm base strum, base strum will be played like this.
Pattern two is a base strum alternate strum, what’s different about that is that every chord has a base node which is based on a ruling chord and an alternate base node which is usually just another adjacent string ideally the fifth tone of the scale makes a very nice alternate base node. But anyway an E minor the alternate base node is gonna be a fifth string second fret. So if we play base strum alternate strum it sounds something like this. Its good idea to count those out, ammm those first two strumming patterns are counted one two three four.
Pattern number three is little different it is counted one two three, its three four time or also called lopes time. The pattern is base strum strum, you would count one two three. So let’s try that a little bit with the E minor ammm one two three, one two three. Notice that I am using my thumb and my finger to do that strumming pattern.
